about.

Josh Riesel is a designer and researcher currently based in Wurundjeri country, Melbourne. Growing up in Gadigal country, Sydney, his practice has navigated avenues of ecological connection, presented across art and design. Most recently, Josh’s practice has been centred around design material experimentation, lighting, and furniture design.

Josh completed a Bachelor of Product Design (Honours) from UTS in 2019, culminating in the development of Lucidum, a mycelium-bound lighting solution. Building on this project, Josh soon moved to Melbourne to continue his practice out of the Mycelium Studios MycoLab.

A current Masters Research candidate within RMIT School of Design, his research explores means of supporting ecologies through alternative materials, products, and systems.

In 2023 Josh engaged in a number of public displays of work, namely hosting IM-PERMANENT as part of NGV Melbourne Design Week alongside Ellis Jones and RMIT Industrial Design. He also developed work for ecological bookstore TERRAIN, collaborated on Shroom Tomb with Cera-Stribley, and collaborated with Dunne & Raby on their NGV Triennial piece World of Many Worlds: After the Festival.

His works celebrating alternative materiality have continued to be recognised throughout Australia and overseas.
